Meeting on the development and application of indicators in the field of environmental protection

Online, 9 February 2021 — The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) organized an online seminar entitled “Indicators: their types and categories, and their use in the monitoring and evaluation of strategic environmental documents” for representatives of the bodies of the Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (ICSD IFAS).

The seminar was delivered by GIZ Regional Consultant Ms. Gulnaz Kaalykova (Kyrgyz Republic) and aimed at strengthening the professional capacities of specialists in the development, application and analysis of indicators in the preparation and implementation of environmental strategic and programmatic documents.

During the first session, participants were provided with an overview of the processes involved in the development and structure of programmatic documents, as well as the main types and categories of indicators and the stages of their formulation for strategic documents. The second session focused on the development and structure of indicator matrices for programmes, including practical aspects related to the structuring of monitoring and evaluation frameworks.

Particular emphasis was placed on group-based practical exercises on the development of indicators, using priority areas of a relevant environmental and sustainable development programme document as a case study. Participants presented the results of their group work, followed by a discussion of the proposed approaches and an exchange of professional views.

At the conclusion of the seminar, key outcomes were summarized and further steps were identified to enhance the application of indicator systems within the activities of the ICSD IFAS bodies.

The seminar constituted an important contribution to strengthening specialist capacities in monitoring and evaluation and further reinforced the methodological foundation for the implementation of strategic environmental and sustainable development documents in the region.
