Chairmanship of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development (ICSD)
During the chairmanship of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the following meetings of the Commission were convened:
The 22nd meeting of the ICSD was held in Astana (May 2011), during which the Commission considered the development of the “Green Bridge” Programme; implementation of the regional project “Capacity Building for the Development of Strategic Frameworks and Policies to Promote Low-Carbon Societies in Central Asia” (KEMCO); support for the SIC ICSD environmental portal and the UNEP Knowledge Node; the process of developing the GEO-5 report for Central Asia; progress in preparations for the Seventh “Environment for Europe” Ministerial Conference; and the establishment of a Regional Centre for Renewable Energy Sources in Central Asia (RES CA).

The 23rd meeting of the ICSD was held in Astana (November 2011), where discussions focused on the coordination of national financial contributions to the Framework Convention on Environmental Protection for Sustainable Development; implementation of the Central Asian Countries’ Initiative on Land Management; the activities of the ICSD Public Council and the Central Asian Youth Environmental Network; preparations for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20); outcomes of the seminar “Strengthening Institutional Frameworks for Sustainable Development through an Environmental Dimension”; the issue of the Atmospheric Brown Cloud and management of return water; and the review of the Regional Diagnostic Report and the Cooperation Plan on water quality issues in Central Asia.

The 24th meeting of the ICSD was held in Astana (November 2012), where the Commission mandated the submission of proposals on environmental priorities to UNEP in follow-up to the outcomes of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). The meeting also took note of information on the prospects of the EU-funded project “Regional Coordination and Support for Enhanced Regional Cooperation between the European Union and Central Asia in the Areas of Environment and Water.”
