Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, 15 May 2025 – The Scientific Information Centre of the Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development (SIC ICSD), in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and with the support of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, held the inception workshop for the project “Strengthening the Capacity of Turkmenistan to Comply with the Enhanced Transparency Framework under the Paris Agreement” (CBIT).
The workshop gathered more than 35 participants from various ministries and state agencies, academic institutions, civil society organizations, and international partners. It marked the official launch of the CBIT project in Turkmenistan, which is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). At the national level, the SIC ICSD serves as the project executing partner, while FAO acts as the implementing agency.

The event provided an opportunity to review Turkmenistan’s climate-related commitments under the Paris Agreement, the project structure and its key components, as well as mechanisms for coordination, monitoring, and evaluation. Special emphasis was placed on the role of national stakeholders in ensuring effective implementation and on facilitating the exchange of knowledge and experience.
Overall, the CBIT project in Turkmenistan aims to strengthen the institutional and technical capacities required to ensure comprehensive, transparent, and timely reporting on the country’s climate commitments. Particular attention will be paid to improving interagency coordination, enhancing systems for data collection and climate information analysis, and increasing awareness and engagement among national and regional stakeholders.

In closing, participants underscored the strategic importance of the project in supporting Turkmenistan’s efforts to meet its obligations under the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement, and the Regional Environmental Programme for Sustainable Development in Central Asia (REP4SD).
