SIC ICSD Presented a Report on Restoring Land Productivity at the NDC 3.0 National Workshop


Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, 12 September 2025 – Experts from the Scientific-Information Centre of the Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development (SIC ICSD) participated in the national workshop on the process of updating Turkmenistan’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) under its commitments to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement. The event was organized within the framework of UNDP’s global initiative Climate Promise 2, coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, and gathered around 30 representatives of relevant ministries and agencies, national coordinators of the Rio Conventions, as well as international and regional organizations working in the field of environment and sustainable development.

Participants paid special attention to Turkmenistan’s obligations under the Paris Agreement and the preparation of the Third National NDC Report. In addition to discussions on conceptual and sectoral approaches, practical steps were presented, including technological and regulatory measures for energy efficiency in the electricity sector, as well as methane emission reductions in the gas industry. A dedicated session was held on the implementation of Turkmenistan’s 2025-2026 Roadmap under the Global Methane Pledge.

From SIC ICSD, the Centre’s Director, Mr. Mukhammet Durikov, took part in the meeting along with other Centre's experts. In his capacity as the National Coordinator for the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), Mr.Durikov delivered a report entitled “Voluntary Commitments of Turkmenistan on Preventing Land Degradation and Restoring Land Productivity”. In his statement, he highlighted the national targets for achieving Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN), noted the results achieved to date, and outlined new priorities to be reflected in the updated National Action Programme to Combat Desertification in 2025.

The meeting also addressed Turkmenistan’s commitments under related Rio Conventions, including the UNFCCC and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). In the context of CBD implementation, participants discussed national priorities for conserving ecosystems and rare species, as well as integrating biodiversity considerations into the country’s updated climate contribution. It was emphasized that sustainable ecosystem management is directly linked to enhancing climate resilience and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The workshop represented an important milestone in Turkmenistan’s national process for preparing NDC 3.0, providing a platform for cross-sectoral dialogue, exchange of experience, and the development of coordinated approaches. The final proposals will contribute to raising Turkmenistan’s climate ambition and strengthening its contribution to global efforts under the Paris Agreement.
