Turkmenabat, Turkmenistan, 14-16 April 2025 – Representatives of the Scientific Information Centre of the Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development (SIC ICSD) participated in a three-day training workshop entitled “Assessment and Application of Nature-based Solutions.” The event was organized within the framework of the FAO project TCP/TUK/3904 “Enhancing Capacities for Climate-Resilient Water Resources Management,” implemented in close cooperation with the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan.
The training brought together 35 national specialists, including representatives from local authorities (hyakimliks), forestry departments, dayhan (farmers') associations, land leaseholders, and civil society organizations. The sessions were held at the Central Library in Turkmenabat, Lebap province, and combined theoretical modules with practical field exercises.

ICSD representatives actively contributed to the training by delivering presentations on “The Impact of Climate Change on the Lebap Region” and “Using Rainwater Runoff for Afforestation on Pasturelands,” and also moderated during group discussions. Both presentations sparked lively interest among participants, emphasizing the importance of localized solutions in addressing climate challenges.
A key component of the training was the practical analysis and selection of optimal nature-based solutions using the WOCAT platform (World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies). Participants were divided into small groups to conduct risk assessments and propose bioengineering measures tailored to specific challenges. The group presentations reflected strong participant engagement and the applied, hands-on nature of the seminar.
SIC ICSD’s participation in the training underlines the importance of institutional and scientific engagement in advancing climate-resilient natural resource management across Central Asia. The event also contributed to the implementation of the Regional Environmental Programme for Sustainable Development in Central Asia, including priorities aligned with SDG 13 and sustainable land use.
