ICSD representatives participated at the Samarkand Climate Forum


Samarkand, Uzbekistan, 4-5 April 2025 – Representatives of the Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development (ICSD) participated in the international climate forum, “Central Asia in the Face of Global Climate Challenges: Consolidation for Common Prosperity,” which convened over 2,000 delegates from Central Asian nations, international and regional organizations, the scientific community, the private sector, and media outlets.

The forum’s core agenda focused on climate risks and the sustainable future of Central Asia. Participants deliberated on key issues pertaining to adaptation to climate change, the transition to a green economy, and the strengthening of regional cooperation. The forum’s agenda encompassed a range of priority areas, from clean energy and water resources to sustainable cities and youth engagement.

The forum featured specialized sessions, including: "Green Economy as a Pathway to Sustainable Development"; "Conservation of Biological Diversity and Natural Ecosystems of Central Asia in Response to Climate Challenges"; "Clean Energy: A Foundation for Sustainable and Environmentally Sound Development"; "Integrated Water Resources Management in the Context of Climate Change in Central Asia"; "Youth: Looking to the Future with Optimism"; "Sustainable Cities and Climate Issues: Integrated Planning and Management"; and "Scientific Approaches and Innovative Solutions to the Problem of Climate Change: Global Challenges and Local Strategies."

The specialized session on "Conservation of Biological Diversity and Natural Ecosystems of Central Asia in Response to Climate Challenges," held on April 5 with the participation of the ICSD, was dedicated to preserving the region's unique natural heritage amidst increasing climate pressures. Participants underscored the critical importance of transboundary cooperation, the protection of endangered species, and the restoration of degraded natural areas affected by climate change.

The session also emphasized the need to develop and implement regional strategies aimed at conserving biodiversity. Key priorities included the establishment of ecological corridors for migratory species, the introduction of modern monitoring systems, and the integration of nature conservation approaches into national action plans. Participants called for expanded international partnerships and the mobilization of resources for the sustainable management of Central Asia's ecosystems.

Many of the topics discussed at the Samarkand International Climate Forum are closely aligned with the priorities of the Regional Environmental Programme for Sustainable Development of Central Asia, which aims to address the region's environmental challenges. The Forum represented an important step in promoting sustainable development, strengthening transboundary cooperation, and introducing innovative approaches to conserve biodiversity and natural resources, thereby contributing to the shared prosperity of the Central Asian nations.
