ICSD Secretariat

The Secretariat of the Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development (ICSD) was established to provide organizational, informational and coordination support to the activities of the Commission.

The Secretariat of the Commission was established by decision of the ICSD on 9 August 1995, upon the proposal of the President of Turkmenistan, endorsed by the Heads of State of Central Asia (Tashkent, 1995), with its permanent seat in Ashgabat. Following a competitive process, the Head SIC of ICSD was established under the National Institute of Deserts, Flora and Fauna of the Ministry of Nature Protection of Turkmenistan. The Secretariat of the Commission operates within the SIC of ICSD.

The main functions of the Secretariat are as follows:

  • preparing and disseminating materials related to ICSD activities;

  • organizing ICSD meetings and other events pursuant to ICSD decisions;

  • ensuring coordination among the working bodies of the ICSD;

  • preparing ICSD reports;

  • implementing assignments of the ICSD Chair.

The structure of the Secretariat includes:

  • the Head Secretariat, based in Ashgabat (Turkmenistan);

  • the Secretary to the ICSD Chair, based in the country holding the Chairmanship of the ICSD;

  • in other member States, the functions and authority of the Secretariat are vested in a staff member of the respective branch of the Scientific Information Centre of ICSD.

The Head of the Secretariat is appointed and dismissed by decision of the ICSD.
